Organist & Director of Music
ALEXANDER BERRY
MA(Cantab) FRCO

Alexander began his musical training as a chorister at Lichfield Cathedral. He was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he was also Organ Scholar. During his final year at Cambridge, he held the posts of Organ Scholar to King's Voices (the mixed-voice undergraduate choir at King's College) and accompanist to CUMS Chorus. After graduating, Alexander spent two years as Assistant Organist to Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir, followed by a further two years as Assistant Organist at Magdalen College, Oxford. At Magdalen, Alexander divided his time between playing for daily services in the College Chapel during university term time and, as Tutor to the Choristers at Magdalen College School, taught a programme of theory and musicianship to the choristers. 

Alexander took up the position of Organist and Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral in January 2017. Aged 27, he is the youngest cathedral organist working in the Church of England. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, and has given recitals in venues across the UK, as well as in Germany, Denmark, and Russia. 

 

 

 

 

 


Sub-Organist & Assistant Director of Music
JON PAYNE
PhD MMus DipChD(RCO) ACertCM

Jon was educated at Skegness Grammar School, and read music at the University of Surrey. Graduating in 1996, he was appointed Director of the Wenhaston Boys' Choir in Suffolk, and was then Organ Scholar at Norwich Cathedral. He then moved into music education, working as a choral animateur for both Norfolk and Solihull Music Services.

He was Assistant Organist at St Alphege, Solihull, and Director of Music at St Thomas, Stourbridge. Jon has worked with over 150 choirs and singing projects, as well as undertaking arts and event management roles for the Throckmorton Literary Festival, Birmingham Youth Music Action Zone, and the RNLI.

In 2013, he co-directed a performance involving 1,500 children at the Royal Albert Hall, and was part of the team directing the Royal School of Church Music's International Summer School. He worked as a Regional Music Adviser for the RSCM from 2010 to 2014. He directed the Worcestershire Boys Make Noise programme, demonstrating the power singing has to change not just individual lives, but the culture of whole communities.

Jon is a founder of, and adviser to Church Music Future, a national organisation providing support to clergy and church musicians in parish churches. He holds the Diploma in Choral Directing from the Royal College of Organists (Gerald H Knight Memorial Prize winner), the Archbishops' Certificate in Church Music from the Guild of Church Musicians, and further qualifications in music and psychology.


Organ Scholar
JON PILGRIM

Jon began his experience of sacred music as a chorister at St Leonard's Church, Hythe, Kent, where he later became organ scholar. He read music at the University of Southampton, and during his degree was appointed as the university organ scholar; and Senior Organ Scholar at Romsey Abbey.

Before leaving for university, he achieved an Associate of Trinity College, London recital diploma with distinction, on the piano. He is currently working towards Associateship of the Royal College of Organists.

 

 

 

 

 


Friends of Cathedral Music Chorister Tutor
JOSEPH JUDGE
MusB(Hons) DipABRSM

Joseph is a versatile Singer and Conductor based in the UK. Recently appointed Director of the Hallé Choral Academy, he also holds the posts of Lay Clerk at Manchester Cathedral, Leader with the Hallé Corporate Choir scheme, Assistant MD of St George’s Singers, FCM Chorister Tutor at Bradford Cathedral, and regularly sings with BBC Radio 4’s Daily Service Singers. He was one of the eight inaugural Fellows of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (2015/16), performing as part of an elite vocal octet throughout the UK and in Malta, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

 

Joseph is in demand as a Countertenor, and recent solo engagements have included Bach Magnificat at Snape Maltings, Bach St John Passion, Handel Messiah and Dixit Dominus. Joseph also continues to sing and work with many UK choirs and ensembles, including Armonico Consort and Westminster Abbey Choir. He has participated in masterclasses given by James Gilchrist, Harry Christophers CBE, and Lucy Schaufer.

 

Joseph has conducted rehearsals for Leeds Philharmonic Chorus, Salford Choral Society, Hallé Youth Choir, and directed the vocals for the PlayStation advert, The King. He is the founder and director of Turton Consort, whose performances have included a highly acclaimed recital of Monteverdi Madrigals Book IV at St Ann’s Church, Manchester, and at the Whitworth Art Gallery for the opening of the Marcantonio Raimondi exhibition.
