What is a Choir Chaperone?

Chaperones are an integral part of the running of the cathedral choir and we are extremely grateful for all their support. The role is wide-ranging and rewarding, especially as the chaperones get to know the choristers better, supporting the children in all their activities at the cathedral.

Their main responsibility is to chaperone rehearsals and choir events involving children on a rostered basis. They are a second adult responsible for the pastoral care and well-being of the under-18s present, and keep an eye out for children who may have any issues. They are both a quiet presence during choir rehearsals and services, and an active staff helper (for example, serving refreshments before rehearsals). The role is voluntary, and can fit around other commitments; however, it is expected that chaperones are willing to be available at least twice a month.

What are the benefits?

This role is well suited to those who want to gain experience of volunteering, working with and managing children, safeguarding, and working as part of a cathedral music department. The role lends itself to many skills desired by employers; including working with others, communication, making effective decisions and personal development. However, this role is not limited to those seeking to gain experience - we are happy to welcome anyone of any age who works well with children and who has a kind and warm manner, whilst being able to stay calm under pressure.

Due to the nature of the work, both an Enhanced DBS check and Diocesan Safeguarding training (at levels C0 and C1) will be required for this role. These will be provided for you by the cathedral, as well as role-specific training given by our Choir Matron.

The choir often goes on 'Safari Evensong' visits to churches in and around the Diocese, as well as on trips out and on annual tours both in the UK and abroad. As a chaperone, there will be opportunities for you to join us on these trips!

What is the application process?

We have tried to make the application process as simple as possible. Firstly, you can express an interest and leave us some contact details by filling in a short form.

You can find the sign-up form HERE.

Next, we will be in touch to arrange a short chat (online or in-person). This isn't an interview, just a chance for us to get to know you.

Finally, if everything checks out, we will arrange for your DBS check and training. After that, you can begin working!

Who can I contact if I have any questions?

We are more than happy to answer any questions you have, or clarify anything that isn't clear. You can contact either our Choir Matron, Daniel Lappin (who manages the chaperones) or our Music Department Administrator, Luke Johnson.
