Heritage Open Day

National Heritage Open Day: “People Power” | Free entry
Sunday 15th September | 12noon - 3pm

Bradford Cathedral will be opening its doors on Sunday 15th September as part of the national Heritage Open Days week that takes place annually, this year celebrating the theme of People Power.

From 12noon – 3pm you’ll be able to explore the history of the cathedral through tours, talks and give-it-a-go activities.

Heritage Open Day

Maggie Myers, the Director of Education and Visitors, will be giving tours of the Cathedral, at 12:30pm and 2pm with Bradford Cathedral volunteer and Civil War vlogger Catherine Warr providing a history of the Battle of the Steeple throughout the day.

There will also be the chance to discover more about bell-ringer Joe Hardcastle with Diane Hadwen, member of the education team, and look through some of the exciting historical artefacts kept within the cathedral.

Visitors will also be able to head up to the bell-ringing room with tower captain Ron Crabtree and there will be colouring activities, quizzes and trails during the open day for children and families to take part in.

You can pre-book your place for the main guided tours now via Eventbrite, and you can sign up for the tower tours on the day.

Maggie Myers:

“Heritage Open Day is the perfect opportunity to come and see the oldest and most beautiful building in the heart of Bradford and to learn something about the people and the stories that make up its history.

“We will be highlighting some of the local people and groups, including the Bradford Rabble in the English Civil War and the fascinating story of Joe Hardcastle, a local man who spent sixty years as a cathedral bell-ringer and kept a journal spanning forty-four years.

“Come to see us for a fascinating peak into the heritage of this amazing cathedral which has played such an important part in the history of Bradford.”
